Cooking tips

Make a porchetta-inspired spice rub for meats and veggies.

Mix together 1½ tablespoons fine sea salt, 1 tablespoon finely chopped rosemary, 1 tablespoon coarsely ground fennel seeds, 2 teaspoons garlic powder, 1½ teaspoons coarsely ground black pepper, 1 teaspoon crumbled dried sage leaves, and the zest of 1 lemon. Use to season a pork roast, chicken, potatoes, or the vegetable of your choice.

Brew a soothing cup of CCF tea.

Add 1¼ cups water and ¾ teaspoon each coriander, cumin, and fennel seeds in a saucepan, bring to a boil, cover, let steep for 10 minutes, strain, and enjoy.

Chomp a few fennel seeds after eating.

Pop a little spoonful of fennel seeds after a meal—they taste good and their anti-inflammatory properties are said to aid with digestion!

Add to baked goods and desserts.

Fennel’s anise flavor is amazing in sweets—try them in whole orange cakes, biscotti, almond cookies, and more.

Hariyali Fennel (meaning fennel in Hindi) was named for its vibrant colour, heady aroma, and sweet-spicy flavour, with hints of anise. It comes from the 20-acre Sakariya family farm in Gujarat, and grows in the company of custard apples, guavas, millet, and heirloom wheat.

The Sakarias have been farming for six generations, and follow zero-budget natural farming methods that minimize external inputs and prioritise intercropping. They work closely with cows, using their manure and urine to formulate fertilisers that fortify the plants and soil biome.

The Sakariyas’ methods have evolved with time: the fields are irrigated instead of rain-fed and tractors have replaced bullock carts for tilling the land, but their philosophy remains the same: nurture the soil and ecosystem, and the produce will flourish.

Many store-bought spices are irradiated to improve shelf life, but the fennel from the Sakaria farm is minimally processed.. Following harvest, it is dried, threshed, and sorted to remove impurities. No additives, no dyes, nothing but natural goodness.

As with everything I buy from you, the aroma when I open my tin, lets me know how fresh and wonderful the taste will be. There is no other spice company that compares. I just made the best biscotti with your fennel. I will looking to use it in many more of my dishes. I started with my first amazing batch of turmeric when your company was brand new, and my spice shelf is now filled with so many spices. Are all your spices organic?

Our farm partners have been cultivating spices using practices that go "beyond organic" for well over five years. Although they haven't obtained USDA certification yet, this is primarily because the initial certification can be costly and may lead to cycles of debt. To meet USDA standards, four years of inspections and certificates are required after the first certification. However, we consider this process redundant and unnecessary since we conduct thorough testing on every batch we procure. It's a prerequisite for Diaspora Co. to select farm partners whose soil health and agricultural practices align with our internal standards of growing food regeneratively.

When do the spices expire? How long do they last?

Most of the spices are good 2 years from the mill date, which is listed on the harvest label sticker on the jar or bag. That being said, our spices are extremely potent and fresh as we take incredible care to source yearly and aim for quality, so 2 years is our most conservative guideline, compared to most spices in the grocery store which are often 5-10 years old upon purchase.

What is the best way to store the spices?
