Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Diaspora Co. spices different from others?

We prioritize flavor and aroma over size, yield, and color, ensuring our spices are the most delicious on the market. Every spice undergoes months or even years of sourcing, rigorous lab testing, field visits (yes, our team visits every partner farm!), and tastings before making it to your kitchen.

How do you ensure your spices are fresh and flavorful?

All our ground spices and masalas are freshly milled and blended in small production runs to guarantee maximum potency and flavor. This ensures there’s no risk of stale or bland spices. We’re all about offering the best, most flavorful spices that will take your cooking to the next level.

How do you support your farm partners?

We pay our farm partners an average of of 3x- 5x the commodity prices to support natural, regenerative farming practices. We also invest in farm infrastructure, such as irrigation systems, solar dryers, and mills.

What are your sustainability practices?

Partnering exclusively with pesticide-free farms.
Supporting regenerative farming to improve soil health and climate resilience.
Investing in heirloom and native seed varietals for seed sovereignty.
Using recyclable and compostable packaging materials whenever possible.
Growing our business at a sustainable rate to uphold our values.

Do you sell wholesale?

We do! You can search for our wholesalers using our store locator here. And if you are a wholesaler and don’t see yourself on the locator, please email wholesale@diasporaco.com and we will add you to this ASAP! Thank you!

How do you honor South Asian culture through your spices?

We collaborate with farmers to name our spices thoughtfully, recognising the political and cultural significance of naming. Our website features audio pronunciations for spices, chef-tested recipes, and articles on the histories of our spices to celebrate South Asian culture and heritage. We also partner with South Asian creators on collaborations that celebrate the region’s rich history, such as tools with Tiipoi & Green Heirloom, aprons with NorBlackNorWhite, and swag with Work & Shelter.

Are all your spices organic?

Our farm partners have been cultivating spices using practices that go "beyond organic" for well over five years. Although they haven't obtained USDA certification yet, this is primarily because the initial certification can be costly and may lead to cycles of debt. To meet USDA standards, four years of inspections and certificates are required after the first certification. However, we consider this process redundant and unnecessary since we conduct thorough testing on every batch we procure. It's a prerequisite for Diaspora Co. to select farm partners whose soil health and agricultural practices align with our internal standards of growing food regeneratively.
